Chelsea to prioritise Reece James and Tammy Abraham deals in New Year

Chelsea will offer academy products Reece James and Tammy Abraham new bumper contracts in the new year.

Abraham, who scored the winner against Arsenal on Sunday, has been prolific this season leading the line for Frank Lampard’s Blues.

James, 20, has played 17 games in all competitions and he is contracted to the club until 2022 but Chelsea want to pre-empt any problems by handing him a pay boost and extending his deal further still.

Abraham also has two-and-a-half years remaining but his value would have skyrocketed off the back of his 14 goals and five assists this season.

Agreements are expected to be reached with both, claim The Athletic, though the terms of Callum Hudson-Odoi’s new deal will have had an inflationary effect on the numbers being discussed.

The winger, who was the subject of intense transfer interest from Bayern Munich, reportedly earns £180,000-per-week.

Abraham is believed to be holding out for a similar pay packet, although he has longer remaining on his deal than Hudson-Odoi did when he signed his contract.
