Everton set to battle Chelsea for Josh Maja transfer after secret scouting trip

Everton have sent scouts to keep an eye on former Sunderland star Josh Maja at current club Bordeaux.

The Toffees are on the lookout for new faces to join in January following the appointment of Carlo Ancelotti.

He’s got Cenk Tosun, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Moise Kean on the books but both strikers could be heading for the Goodison Park exit.

Calvert-Lewin has been linked with Manchester United, while Starsport understands the Toffees are keen to ship out £27m flop Tosun.

Kean has also had a mixed time of it on Merseyside following his summer move from Juventus, and is wanted by clubs back in Serie A.

He wrote on Twitter: “#Everton notably supervised #Maja ( #Bordeaux ) during the defeat of December 15 against Strasbourg. Other Premier League residents are also watching the former Sunderland player. #Mercato#FCGB”

When grilled about his transfer plans, Ancelotti said this week: “The market is not open yet – it opens tomorrow! There are a lot of rumours. That is normal. Everywhere in the world, it is like this. In Italy, it is the same.
