Joe Cole has offered a somewhat surprising slant on Chelsea’s 1-1 draw at Brighton in the Premier League on New Year’s Day.
The Blues have enjoyed important wins in the last few weeks such as the triumphs over Tottenham and Arsenal, but equally so defeats against the likes of West Ham, Everton, Bournemouth and Southampton have all been unexpected blows.
The trip to Brighton was in between those two extremes as Chelsea failed to control the game and the Seagulls dominated periods of the contest.
Cesar Azpilicueta, however, opened the scoring for the visitors, only for Alireza Jahanbakhsh to eventually equalise in the 84th minute for the home side.

Whilst Chelsea dropped a further two points in the race for the Champions League qualification spots, Frank Lampard’s men still sit in fourth, with Cole explaining that the Blues will look at the result as a good one down the line.
“There will be some frustration because the game was there for the taking,” Cole told BT Sport.
“I thought Brighton grew into the game and had it gone on another ten minutes, they were the only team who was going to win it.
“It has been an up and down run for Chelsea but they are still in fourth and overall, I think Frank will be happy.
“Chelsea had to dig in today and this might be one of those games you look back on in a few months and think it was a well-earned point.”
