Olivier Giroud to Newcastle: January loan deal, Aston Villa interest, what Frank Lampard said

Olivier Giroud’s future at Chelsea continue to be in some doubt, amid interest from other sides in the January transfer window.

The Frenchman has had a frustrating season so far at Chelsea , with Tammy Abraham and Michy Batshuayi ahead of him in the pecking order at Stamford Bridge.

He has only featured seven times for the Blues in all competitions so far this season, and was an unused substitute as Chelsea defeated Nottingham Forest 2-0 in the third round of the FA Cup.

As such, there has been speculation over his long-term future in west London, with Premier League duo Aston Villa and Newcastle United both among the potential suitors as Giroud looks for more regular game time ahead of the European Championships this summer.

Below, we take a look at the latest on Giroud’s future, including what his manager Frank Lampard has said.

Newcastle want loan deal

He may not be in favour at Chelsea, but Giroud has his admirers elsewhere in the Premier League.

Newcastle are one of the clubs interested in signing the 33-year-old, with Steve Bruce’s Magpies struggling for goals this season amid a number of injury problems within the squad.

The Telegraph reports that Newcastle are keen to sign Giroud on loan, and that the Magies made contact with Chelsea last week to discuss the possibility of signing the Frenchman on a short-term basis.

However, the report states that Chelsea will not allow him to leave unless the Blues can bring in a replacement.
