Chelsea confident Reece James will sign contract extension ‘imminently’

Chelsea are understood to be in ‘advanced talks’ with defender Reece James about a new contract.

The right-back has impressed for the Blues in his debut season, and is set to be rewarded with a new long-term deal.

James is thought to have been in talks over a new deal for much of the season, with his current contract due to expire in the summer of 2022.

But according to Football Insider, Stamford Bridge bosses have stepped up the discussions, and the Englishman will reportedly sign on the dotted line ‘imminently’.

James, 20, has made 10 Premier League appearances this term, but has been prominent in cup competitions and in Europe.

The England U21 international even forced Frank Lampard to completely rethink his defence, pushing skipper Cesar Azpilicueta out to left-back to allow James to feature.

His playing time was limited over the festive period, but he saw out the full 90 minutes against Brighton and Nottingham Forest in Chelsea’s last two matches.
