Olivier Giroud to Newcastle: Deschamps’ Chelsea warning, Aston Villa interest, what Lampard said

Olivier Giroud has been told he should leave Chelsea this month by his national team manager, amid interest from Newcastle and Aston Villa in the January transfer window.

The Frenchman has had a frustrating season so far at Chelsea, with only seven appearances for the Blues so far this season in all competitions as Tammy Abraham and Michy Batshuayi are ahead of him in the pecking order at Stamford Bridge.

The former Arsenal striker was an unused substitute as Chelsea defeated Nottingham Forest 2-0 in the third round of the FA Cup yesterday (Sunday), with Batshuayi again preferred to him up front for the game.

As such, there has been plenty of speculation over his long-term future in west London, with Premier League duo Aston Villa and Newcastle United both among the potential suitors as Giroud looks for more regular game time ahead of the European Championships this summer.

Below, we take a look at the latest on Giroud’s future, including what his manager Frank Lampard has said.

Newcastle want loan deal

Giroud is not short of admirers in the Premier League, with Newcastle one of the clubs interested in signing the 33-year-old.

Steve Bruce’s Magpies have struggled for goals this season amid a number of injury problems within the squad.

The Telegraph reports that Newcastle are keen to sign Giroud on loan, and that the Magpies made contact with Chelsea last week to discuss the possibility of signing the Frenchman on a short-term basis.

However, the report states that Chelsea will not allow him to leave unless the Blues can bring in a replacement.
