The three Ben Chilwell transfer alternatives Chelsea can sign to solve their left-back woes

Once again Chelsea have a top quality left-back near the top of their list of transfer targets in Leicester City’s Ben Chilwell.

A January move for the England international would be unlikely but come the summer expect the Blues to be in for the 23-year-old.

If Frank Lampard can lead the club to another top four spot in the Premier League, and perhaps even lift the FA Cup or enter the latter stages of the Champions League by beating an under-performing Bayern Munich side, the young defender can be convinced.

Then again, Chelsea have been here before with Alex Sandro.

Under Antonio Conte, the Blues were linked with the Brazilian left-back time and time again. He seemed like the finishing piece of the jigsaw, just as Chilwell does today too.

It was a deal that never came to pass. Sandro remains at Juventus to this day.

What if the powers that be at Stamford Bridge cannot capture their latest primary target at left-back?

football.london have looked across Europe for winning alternatives to the Leicester defender, either as January signings who could end up as back up options to Chilwell or replace him in the club’s transfer plans altogether.

Both Emerson Palmieri and Marcos Alonso have been tipped to leave Cobham in 2020. It wouldn’t necessarily be out of the question to see two left-backs sign for the Blues this year.

Here are three options other than Chilwell to pursue in January – or in the summer if the Foxes keep their man.

Age: 26

Club: Freiburg

Gunter has had an impressive 12 months with Bundesliga outfit Freiburg.

The German has registered nine league assists in that time – only Liverpool’s Andy Robertson has managed more from left-back across Europe’s top five leagues.
