Dean Smith’s first words after Danny Drinkwater completes loan move to Aston Villa from Chelsea

Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater has joined Aston Villa on loan for the rest of the season.

Drinkwater put pen-to-paper after completing a medical at Villa’s Bodymoor Heath training ground on Tuesday morning.

The 29-year-old joined Chelsea in 2017 after helping Leicester to win the Premier League title in 2016, but struggled to make an impact in west London.

Despite being loaned to Burnley in the first half of this season, the England international was often left out of Sean Dyche’s side, and will hope for more game time at Villa Park.

Aston Villa manager Dean Smith had been keen to strengthen his midfield this month after John McGinn suffered a fractured ankle in the defeat to Southampton in December.

And Smith says Drinkwater, who has won three England caps, fits the bill for the relegation battlers.

“Danny was a key member of Leicester City’s title winning team and has represented England so he is a vastly experienced player,” Smith said.

“He will strengthen our squad significantly.”

Drinkwater will be reunited with former Chelsea teammate John Terry, who is currently a coach in Smith’s backroom team.
