Chelsea defender Marc Guehi will today join Swansea City on loan for 18 months, an interesting move not only for his own development, but also for the way it removes a piece from Frank Lampard’s defensive puzzle.
Realistically there wasn’t going to be any room for the 18 year old to get many minutes, especially with the Carabao Cup (where he played twice) in the rear-view mirror.
He was behind Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen, Fikayo Tomori and Kurt Zouma in the queue for playing time, but with him gone we’re reduced to those 4.
Now that may well be enough to go on with, but it’s a little risky, especially if we’re going to play 3 at the back consistently. It leaves us just one injury or suspension away from having nobody on the bench if we were to play a 3.
Is the move of the 18 year old talent actually clearing the way for a much bigger name to come in? We will find out in the coming days and weeks.
