Thomas Lemar to Chelsea: Atletico drop transfer hint as Blues edge Tottenham for loan deal

Where will Thomas Lemar end up this month?

It seems like three London rivals Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham have all been fighting to sign him during the January transfer window.

It is not the first time the Frenchman has been tipped to move to the Premier League, but a deal to take him to the capital could finally happen this month.

Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone has opened up on the midfielder’s future saying: “Facts speak better than words. Lemar is an important player who hasn’t been able to develop his game but who has characteristics that others don’t have.”

With that said, here’s everything we know about the Lemar transfer rumours.

£92m bid

Back in the summer of 2017, Arsenal were first linked with a move for Lemar whilst he was still an AS Monaco player and he was seen as a replacement for Alexis Sanchez amid links to Manchester City.

In the end, Sanchez ended up staying at the Emirates until January.

The reason for that could have been because the Gunners weren’t able to secure a deal for Lemar and not without a lack of trying as Arsene Wenger revealed the club made a huge offer.

“He decided to stay at Monaco,” Wenger told Telefoot – via the Daily Mail – in 2017. “Did we make a €100m offer? Yes. Are we going to make another offer? Yes.

“He is always ready to receive the ball, he is quite complete in both defence and attack.”

Atletico Madrid transfer

Whether the Gunners did make another bid for Lemar as Wenger says has never been disclosed.

And with the Frenchman stepping down at the end of the 2017/2018 season, the north London outfit’s apparent interest in the midfielder vanished too.

As a result, Atletico Madrid swooped in and signed Lemar the following summer for a deal in the region of £52.7m.
