Leicester City fans will love what Gary Lineker has said about Chelsea loanee Danny Drinkwater

Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater will not want to remember his Aston Villa debut.

It was not the return to the Premier League that the Chelsea man would have wanted as he featured for Villa for the first time during his loan spell in the Midlands, with the relegation-threatened side thrashed 6-1 at home by Manchester City.

Drinkwater started the game, having only joined Villa earlier this week after returning from a loan spell at Burnley in the first half of the season, where he only featured twice.

Coincidentally, his last Premier League appearances for Chelsea and Burnley also came against Manchester City, with Pep Guardiola’s side winning on all three occasions.

That included a 1-0 win against Chelsea back in March 2018 at the Etihad Stadium, a 4-1 victory against Burnley at Turf Moor earlier this season and the 6-1 thrashing of Villa this afternoon.

And Drinkwater had a moment to forget in the heavy defeat at Villa Park, before being substituted in the second half.

The midfielder, who won the Premier League during his time at Leicester City, was dispossessed in his own box as Villa looked to try and clear the ball, with City pouncing as Drinkwater’s former Foxes team-mate Riyad Mahrez netted his second goal of the game to make it 2-0.

That led to some criticism from supporters, while Match of the Day host Gary Lineker also took to social media to tease the Chelsea loanee with a reference to his time at Leicester.

This was only Drinkwater’s second appearance in the Premier League this season, having only played in a Carabao Cup tie and one top flight match for Burnley during his loan spell.

Since the beginning of last season, Drinkwater has only played four matches, including the Community Shield for Chelsea in August 2018, which was also against Manchester City.
