Martin Keown’s claims that Virgil van Dijk is the greatest defender in Premier League history have been shot down by ex- Chelsea player Jason Cundy.
Liverpool spent £75m to bring Van Dijk to Anfield two years ago and his signing has since helped turn the club from also-rans into European and World champions.
And Keown reckons there is no comparison, ranking the Dutchman above the likes of Rio Ferdinand, Tony Adams and Sol Campbell.
“I think he has to be,” he said on talkSPORT when asked in Van Dijk was the best ever. “It’s almost perfection to watch him play.
“Man City jumped out of that, they didn’t want to pay the big money to sign him but, what was it, £75million? That now looks fantastic value.”
But Cundy disagreed and cited Chelsea legend John Terry as the best the top-flight has ever seen.
“Virgil van Dijk is a complete defender, right now he is the most complete defender,” he retorted.

“But the only thing I would say is he joined Liverpool at 26 and he’s now 28… John Terry was captain of Chelsea and lifting Premier League titles at 24!
“This was a player who was doing it at the very, very top and much younger. I think that has to come into it, doesn’t it?”
In 19 years in a Blues shirt, Terry lifted five Premier League titles, five FA Cups, three League Cups, the European Cup and the Europa League.

But Cundy reckons the former Southampton man could eventually match Terry’s achievements in the game, saying Jurgen Klopp’s team are on the cusp of total domination in England and Europe.
“This Liverpool side haven’t lost a league game in a calendar year, their record this season is phenomenal,” he added.
