Timo Werner to Chelsea latest: Transfer chief delivers €25m boost thanks to Robert Lewandowski

We are into the third week of the January transfer window, and Chelsea are eyeing some additions to their squad.

The Blues were handed a two-window ban earlier in the year after breaching FIFA rules, but at the beginning of December it was confirmed that their appeal which was heard by the Court of Arbitration for Sport was successful.

Now that the ban has been reduced, the west London outfit can make signings this month and one of many players being linked with a move to Stamford Bridge is RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner.

With that said, here’s what we know about the rumours linking the German striker to Chelsea.

What Lampard has said

Whilst not mentioning Werner by name, Frank Lampard has hinted at dipping into the transfer market to sign someone capable of replacing the output Eden Hazard provided during his time in west London.

“I think it will be a bit fluid,” Lampard told BT Sport after their 2-1 Champions League win over Lille.

“There will be discussions that go on from now about where we can strengthen because, of course, with Eden (Hazard) leaving, we lost a lot of goals and a lot of creation from Eden in that particular position.

“I think what I’m talking about today is we missed a lot of chances so I think we can look at strengthening that position so there is more competition in those areas.”

Release clause mystery

Chelsea are seeking clarity over whether Werner has a release clause in his contract at RB Leipzig.

That’s according to the Telegraph.

The report states that there has been confusion over the release clause in Werner’s contract, with some quoting as low as £25.6million and some quoting as high as £51.2m in recent months.
