Aston Villa have received a boost in their pursuit of Chelsea ace Olivier Giroud as his switch to Inter Milan has stalled.
Dean Smith is desperate to bolster his striker department after the loss of Wesley to long-term injury.
The Brazilian’s season-ending knee injury leaves Villa with next to no options up front as they bid to avoid relegation.
Giroud has been pursued during January, initially as a loan target.
Instead, though, Villa loaned Danny Drinkwater from the Blues to help strengthen them in the middle of the park.
That deal ended any hopes of Villa getting Giroud on loan as Premier League rules state a club cannot loan two players from the same club at any one time.
However, a permanent move for the experienced 33-year-old hitman is still allowed.
Chelsea are prepared to let Giroud move on two years after his arrival from Arsenal as they are keeping hold of Michy Batshuayi as back-up to Tammy Abraham.

Frank Lampard wants more quality up front and may even sign a striker himself, although a move for target Timo Werner will reportedly have to wait until the summer.
With regards to Villa’s move for Giroud, French outlet Le10 Sport say they are ready to try everything to revive their pursuit.
With a transfer to Inter no longer a done deal, Villa hope to take advantage.

Smith’s side are also on the verge of adding a different striker to their ranks – Genk’s Mbwana Ally Samatta.
The 27-year-old is set to sign for around £8.5m, while Leicester’s Islam Slimani is a loan target as well.
