Chelsea announce new shirt sponsor – but fans left fuming with announcement tweet

Chelsea announced on Friday that telecommunications and internet service provider Three UK will become their official shirt partner from next season.

The mobile network will replace Yokohama, who will remain as the club’s official tyre partner, from the 2020/21 and appear on Chelsea Women and Academy sides shirts alongside the men’s team.

However, supporters were left annoyed by the message posted alongside the announcement on the official Twitter account, which made light of their desperation to see some new signings.

The post reads: “You wait 24 days for a signing and then Three come along at once!”

Chelsea chief executive Guy Laurence gave a statement in relation to the new deal, mentioning streaming as a shared passion between the club and Three.

He said: “Mobile technology has revolutionised the way football clubs and supporters interact with each other which makes Chelsea FC and Three such natural partners.

“We have a social media following of over 100 million and the official app, The 5th Stand, has had nearly four million downloads.

“We stream live women’s and Academy football with men’s first team highlights available soon after matches.

“It truly is an area from which regular fans are benefitting and as communications technology develops in the coming years, Three will be at the forefront of the advances with the exciting roll out of 5G networks, helping…
