Chelsea’s hopes of signing Dries Mertens from Napoli look all but over this month – and the Stamford Bridge faithful are gutted.
It is no secret that Frank Lampard has been looking to strengthen his attack in January, with the Blues boss eager to provide competition for Tammy Abraham upfront.
Reports in Italy have emerged this week linking Belgium international Mertens, 32, with a switch to west London before tonight’s transfer deadline.
Nevertheless, Belgian football expert Kristof Terreur has seemingly ruled Chelsea out of the race for his signature.
Terreur wrote on Twitter this morning: “Chelsea and Dries Mertens. #cfc”.
Underneath that sentence, he also posted a GIF of someone throwing a dart and missing the board completely – suggesting Lampard and co have failed in their attempts to prise Mertens away from Naples.
Blues fans are absolutely devastated at Terreur’s cryptic tweet, with one bemoaning their move for the player “a complete waste of time”.
One said: “He’s banted us off. We’re a shambles”.
“Whyyyyyyyyyyyy” wrote another distressed Chelsea fan.
This supporter wrote: “Seriously what was the point in us appealing the ban if we wasn’t planning who to bring in? Seriously pointless move and a complete waste of time.. The summer better not be like this”.
While another simply posted: “Nooooooooooo”.
Frank Lampard is set to miss out on the Napoli star
Mertens’s current Napoli contract only runs until the summer, meaning Chelsea could try and negotiate a free move for the player which would go through at the end of the season.
Certain reports have suggested Inter Milan could be in the running for the forward, too, but Terreur has also played down their chances.
Inter Milan’s chances of signing Mertens have also been branded “impossible”
