Chelsea urged to seal deadline day deal because of ‘unreliable’ forwards

Chelsea have been told to sign Dries Mertens because they cannot rely on their current roster of attacking players.

The Napoli forward is available on a free in the summer and was tipped to leave the Serie A side for less than £10m this month.

Despite The Daily Telegraph saying that a deal is now unlikely, Liverpool hero Steve Nichol is adamant that they can’t give up on talks.

He told ESPN FC: “Perfect,” he said of Mertens’ potential switch.

“You know, experienced guy, that’s what they need in my opinion going forward.

“They ain’t scoring, so why not? They need somebody else that’s going to put the ball in the net.”

Lampard has been coy over whether the club could secure any incoming or sanction any outgoing deals on the final day of the window, handing fans an update earlier in the week.
