Dries Mertens to Chelsea: Blues to make late move, Napoli’s stance, Olivier Giroud’s future

The race to bring new players into Stamford Bridge before the end of January is almost over.

Frank Lampard is said to be chasing a striker in order to lighten the goalscoring load on Tammy Abraham, especially with concerns hanging over his fitness after injuring his ankle in the FA Cup victory over Hull City.

The Blues have been linked with a number of forwards including Edinson Cavani and Krzysztof Piatek, but time is running out to secure deals as moves elsewhere are completed.

Napoli striker Dries Mertens has been linked with a January move, but could he arrive at Stamford Bridge on transfer deadline day?

Here’s everything that has been said about Mertens’ future in recent months.

Mertens’ contract

The 32-year-old is yet to agree a new deal with Napoli and is available on a free transfer once his contract expires at the end of the season and is able to sign a pre-contract agreement with club’s outside of Italy as of January 1st.

Mertens has been a huge success since moving to Napoli from PSV Eindhoven, with 118 goals in 304 games across all competitions.

However, all the signs are pointing towards the two parties splitting at some point in 2020.

£10m transfer

Despite Mertens being available on a free transfer in five months time, Arsenal are said to be looking at bringing the Belgium international to the Emirates Stadium this month.

The Express stated that Napoil have made the experienced forward available for a bargain price of just £10m in the January transfer window having not been able to agree terms over a new contract.

However, it’s not that straightforward.
