Edinson Cavani’s mother has admitted a transfer to Manchester United or Chelsea would have gone ahead only for the money.
The Uruguay international was desperate to leave Paris St-Germain last month after handing in a transfer request.
A number of clubs had taken an interest in the forward, whose contract is set to expire at the end of the season.
Namely, Chelsea and United – the two Premier League outfits were desperate for some quality up front.
Both sides are looking to land a spot in the top four and a proven goalscorer like Cavani would assure that.
However, Atletico Madrid were also sniffing around the ex-Napoli star.
And Cavani was more than keen on a move to La Liga than the Premier League.
But that transfer never materialised either after reports PSG simply stop answering Atletico’s calls, prompting them to pull out.
Cavani’s mother Berta Gomez blamed the Wanda Metropolitano club but insisted her son would still join Atletico if asked.
Furthermore, she admitted that any move to the Premier League would only have been for the money.
“Edinson did not want money to be a problem,” Gomez told Spanish newspaper AS.
Edinson Cavani was linked with a move to United or Chelsea
“If it had been for money he would have gone to Manchester United, Chelsea or Inter Miami, who made an important offer for him.
“Let no one forget that my son has an impeccable career, he is a complete professional.
“The pressure he put on PSG with not playing to go out to Atletico is a stain on his career.”
United ended up signing Odion Ighalo on loan in the dying moments of deadline day.
