Chelsea’s move for Hakim Ziyech shows how desperate the club have become for wingers.
That is according to Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher.
Frank Lampard made the Morocco international a top target in January but Ajax refused to let their star man go in the midst of a campaign where they are still in three competitions.
It follows a brilliant display in the Champions League at Stamford Bridge where the 26-year-old grabbed three assists.
Ziyech will become Lampard’s first signing since taking over as Chelsea manager last summer.
However, Sky Sports pundit and ex-Liverpool defender Carragher reckons it is an indication of further transfers.
Carragher told Sky Sports: ”I think what these moves tell you straight away is that Chelsea are desperate for wide players.
“With Pedro, who hasn’t played much, and Willian, and the age they’re at, plus the fact Willian gets linked away from Chelsea at every window, something might happen with these two in the summer.
“So wide players are the big thing Chelsea are looking for.
“Ziyech was outstanding last season in the Champions League, and was a player I thought Liverpool may look at as well, someone who can play both sides as potential back-up for Sadio Mane or Mo Salah.
Hakim Ziyech looks set to become a Chelsea player
“I think it was obvious that Frank Lampard wasn’t happy with what happened in the January transfer window, so they’re looking to get some business done early.”
Pedro and Willian will see their contracts expire in the summer and plans to renew look unlikely.
It would have left Callum Hudson-Odoi and Christian Pulisic as the only recognised wingers at the club.
And plans are still afoot to land another wide man, with Jadon Sancho still on the club’s radar.
