Hakim Ziyech has officially signed for Chelsea, with Jamie Carragher revealing he thought Liverpool should have tried to sign the Dutchman.
Frank Lampard made Ziyech his first signing since taking the reins at Stamford Bridge, with the attacker set to join up with the Blues in the summer.
The 26-year-old impressed in Ajax’s 4-4 draw with Chelsea in the Champions League group stages, having a hand in three of his side’s goals, and especially impressed Carragher in Ajax’s run to the semi-finals the year before.
Speaking on Sky Sports’ Football Weekend Preview podcast, Carragher claimed that Ziyech would have been perfect for Liverpool to provide cover for Sadio Mane and Mo Salah.
“The Ajax lad was outstanding last season in that Champions League run,” he said.
“He was a player I thought actually Liverpool may look at as well; he can play both sides, maybe as cover for Mane or Salah.
“But it looks like Chelsea have gone into the market and they’re going to do get something done already.”
Liverpool are expected to lose both Mane and Salah next season after the Africa Cup of Nations was moved from the summer to January and February.

Along with midfielder Naby Keita, they could be absent for up to four weeks, leaving the Reds without some of their most key players.
As a result, Carragher clearly expects Liverpool to add to their wide options in the summer and now that Ziyech has been snapped up, they have been linked with Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho.
Speaking on the same podcast, Carragher said he thinks Sancho will be a success in the Premier League.
