Man Utd and Spurs results will decide Chelsea’s top four fate, says Paul Merson

Chelsea can secure their place in the Premier League top four for the rest of the season if they beat Manchester United and Tottenham in their next two matches.

That’s according to Arsenal legend and Starsport columnist Paul Merson.

The Blues are currently lying in fourth place on 41 points from 35 matches, just two ahead of Sheffield United in fifth.

However, they face fellow Champions League chasers United and Spurs in their next two games, on Monday and next Saturday respectively.

And Merson thinks that Frank Lampard can sleep easy by tying up six points over the next few days, also insisting the Stamford Bridge hero looks to be building something promising with his old club following the £33m signing of Hakim Ziyech from Ajax this week.

“Chelsea can put the top four race to bed in their next two games and Monday night is a massive match,” Merson said in his latest Starsport column.

“I’m going to be there to see them take on Manchester United – and if they win that one and then beat Tottenham they will finish in the top four.

“That would be a huge achievement for Frank Lampard in his first season, after selling a world class player in Eden Hazard and not replacing him, and playing with a young team.

“Now they’re buying Hakim Ziyech from Ajax. Another good signing. Quick. Experienced. Full of goals, and the right age.
