Man City chief Ferran Soriano tells players that Uefa’s Champions League ban ‘will be dropped’

Manchester City chief executive Ferran Soriano has told the club’s players that Uefa’s decision to impose a two-year Champions League ban will be overturned.

Pep Guardiola’s side have been banned from Europe’s premier competition for the next two seasons after found guilty of “serious breaches” of financial fair play regulations, and were also fined £25million.

In a statement on the club’s official website. the reigning Premier League champions said:  “Manchester City is disappointed but not surprised by today’s announcement by the UEFA Adjudicatory Chamber.

“The Club has always anticipated the ultimate need to seek out an independent body and process to impartially consider the comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence in support of its position.”

The ban has huge ramifications for rival sides, given City’s position in the league.

With the Manchester side on course to finish in the top four, the team that finishes fifth will take their place in the Champions League for the 2020/21 campaign as it stands.

Article 4.08 of UEFA’s admission criteria and procedure states: “A club which is not admitted to the competition is replaced by the next best-placed club in the top domestic championship of the same association, provided the new club fulfils the admission criteria.”

Tottenham are currently in fifth at present, with Sheffield United, Everton, Manchester United and Wolves just behind them in the table.

The decision is still subject to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, but as reported by Sky Sports News, City chief Soriano is confident that the club can overturn the decision.
