Arsene Wenger delivers verdict on Frank Lampard’s performance as Chelsea manager

Former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has revealed he has been impressed by Frank Lampard’s short time as Chelsea manager, labelling his start ‘quite encouraging’.

The two clashed many a time over the years, with Wenger in the dugout and Lampard on the pitch and the Frenchman has watched his transition into management with a keen eye.

Most recently, Lampard guided the Blues to a 2-1 win over London rivals Tottenham Hotspur, who are currently managed by his former boss Jose Mourinho.

The win leaves Chelsea four points clear of Spurs in fourth spot and, speaking to BeIN Sports, Wenger praised him for his ability to make ‘tough decisions’.

Against Tottenham, Lampard opted to continue picking Willy Caballero over £72m goalie Kepa Arrizabalaga and handed goalscorer Olivier Giroud just his third Premier League start – decisions which were both vindicated.

“I feel like he has done well overall,” Wenger said of Lampard. “When he had bad results he kept calm, kept the way of playing and I think you judge a manager when he starts with how he deals with disappointment.

“He shows strong character and that’s what’s needed when you work at a big club.”

Speaking after the win, Lampard was delighted to have gotten all three points.
