Frank Lampard drops Ruben Loftus-Cheek return hint ahead of Liverpool FA Cup tie

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has hinted that long-term absentee Ruben Loftus-Cheek will not return to first-team against Liverpool in the FA Cup on Tuesday.

Loftus-Cheek is yet to make an appearance this season after suffering an achilles injury in a friendly in the United States back in May, before the Blues had even played in the Europa League final.

But after a long road to recovery, the England midfielder is almost at the other side, having first been named on the bench against Tottenham just over a week ago.

He’s not quite ready for first-team football yet though, Lampard has warned.

Speaking after Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Bournemouth, the Blues boss told a press conference that Loftus-Cheek would be involved in the development squad’s match against Everton on Monday instead of the FA Cup with Liverpool a day later.

Loftus-Cheek was named on the bench for the draw against Bournemouth, but like Tottenham the week before, he was an unused substitute.

“Ruben is in the squad again for tomorrow,” Lampard said on Friday.

“It would mean a lot to have him back. It’s a lonely place being out for that long. He was in a very good run of form last year.
