Chelsea are into the quarter-final of the FA Cup after a win over Premier League leaders Liverpool at Stamford Bridge.
Goals from Willian and Ross Barkley either side of half-time gave the Blues a deserved win over Jurgen Klopp’s menas they booked their place into the next round of the competition.
Young midfielder Billy Gilmour was selected in the starting eleven by Frank Lampard and impressed fans in his performance . The 18-year-old was also named as man of the match by the BBC.
Before the game, Frank Lampard explained his decision to throw the teenager into the team for just his sixth appearance for Chelsea.
“Billy is playing because he deserves to play because of how he’s trained and played. It’s a comfortable choice,” he told the BBC.
“It’s a big game for Billy and it’s a big test. He has character and personality. I believe he can handle it with his quality. I’m very happy with Billy.”
With the Blues leading 2-0 going into the closing minutes of the game and Gilmour continuing to impress, Chelsea fans at Stamford Bridge showed the youngster what they thought of his impressive performance, with “there’s only one Billy Gilmour” being sung by the Blues fans.
The midfielder was also the subject of praise from pundits at half-time.
“Kepa has been in top form and proven a point to his manager but the star of the show has been Billy Gilmour, he has bossed it,” Alan Shearer told the BBC.
“Whatever he has been asked to do, whether it’s protecting that back four or spraying passes around, he has been absolutely magnificent.”
Gilmour will be hoping to retain his place for the Premier League game against Everton on Sunday.
