Chelsea’s injury list has gotten even lengthier after Mateo Kovacic and Willian both limped off against Liverpool on Tuesday night in the FA Cup.
The Blues managed to secure a brilliant 2-0 victory over Jurgen Klopp’s side thanks to goals from Willian and Ross Barkley.
But there were plenty of grimaces inside Stamford Bridge when Croatian midfielder Kovacic hobbled off just before half-time.
He was then joined on the physio’s bench by goal scorer Willian not long after the break after he pulled up off the ball.
With a remarkable seven players already out injured, Kovacic and Willian join a startling list including: Christian Pulisic, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, N’Golo Kante, Andreas Christensen, Tammy Abraham and Emerson Palmieri.
Mateo Kovacic was taken off during the first half of the match
Several Chelsea fans were left biting their nails on Twitter about Frank Lampard’s injury list, insisting a lengthy set back for Kovacic and Willian is the last thing the club needs.
“Kovacic injury can potentially be the worst thing for Chelsea at this point,” one wrote. “It really leaves Chelsea with limited options. Let’s pray this injury isn’t serious..
“Oh please not Kovacic. We can’t afford to lose this man at this stage of the season,” a second added.
Willian was also forced off with injury after pulling up off the ball
While a third tweeted: “Kovacic injured?! Season done. So we gotta play Everton without Jorginho, Kante or Kovacic. Holy s***!”
“Hopefully Kovacic & Willian will be fine for the weekend,” an optimistic fourth put.
Others felt that young man of the match Billy Gilmour stepped into Kovacic’s role perfectly after Mason Mount was brought on, with the teenage Scot running the midfield in his first FA Cup game.
