Billy Gilmour’s performance for Chelsea in the 2-0 FA Cup fifth round win over Liverpool on Tuesday night remains a hot topic for supporters.
The teenager was handed a start in central midfield against the runaway Premier League leaders and did not look out of place coming up against the likes of Fabinho, Adam Lallana and James Milner over the course of the 90 minutes.
Gilmour repaid Blues head coach Frank Lampard’s faith and he was understandably delighted with how the youngster got on.

“I’ve got absolute trust in Billy. When you watch him play, I remember when we drew against Sheff Uniited and we drew and people asked me after the game ‘this kid looks like a 15 year old’,” Lampard said in his post-match press conference. “But I’ve no problem with him because if he is small in stature he is huge in personality and talent.
“For me when I look at a midfield player, I have lots of questions… does he want to receive the ball in all positions – yes he does. Do you make angles and does he pick the right pass? yes he generally does. Will he put his foot in? Yes he does. And he is humble. All his family were here tonight, I think his Nan and Grandad were down from Scotland.
“What a performance. Not just as a youngster coming to the team, that’s one level, he performed like a top class player going up against top class players. It was great for Billy.”
Ahead of the game, one Liverpool supporter made a bold prediction about the midfield battle between Gilmour and Fabinho.
Uploading an image of the Blues wonderkid on Twitter, @Aaryouz wrote ‘Fabinho is going to eat this man alive’.
Of course it was Gilmour who would go on to have the last laugh as he turned in a man-of-the-match performance at the Brazilian’s expense as the hosts overcame the Reds.
