Roy Hodgson responds to ‘cruel’ Cenk Tosun injury blow amid positive news on Crystal Palace trio

Roy Hodgson has spoken of his sympathy for Cenk Tosun after the striker’s loan spell at Crystal Palace was cut short due to a serious knee injury.

The Turkish striker has left Palace to return to Everton after sustaining a serious knee injury in training this week, with the 28-year-old now set to undergo surgery next week.

The news has come as a blow to Palace , who have just Christian Benteke, Jordan Ayew and Wilfried Zaha as their options in attack, with strikers Connor Wickham and Alexander Sorloth currently out on loan.

Tosun made just five appearances for the Eagles, scoring one goal in the 2-2 draw with Manchester City, but Palace chairman Steve Parish has sent a message to the striker following his exit.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of Palace’s game with Watford, Hodgson said: “It is a real blow, a massive blow in particular for him. We felt it would be great to have him [in this latter part of the season] and he would have brought something different for us.

“It has come at a bad time for all of us, but most importantly for Cenk [Tosun]. To be hit by this cruel blow, we have enormous sympathy for him, and we wish him well with the surgery and hope to see him back soon.”
