In his formative years at Barcelona, as well as during his time in La Liga with Eibar and Getafe, Cucurella has featured as a full-back, wing-back, wide midfielder and winger.
While at La Masia, the Spaniard was given a footballing education in retaining possession, defending with the ball, understanding space and gaining football intelligence.
His more modest spells in the Spanish top flight have merged that experience with the realities of playing outside of Barcelona.
Eibar were intense with their pressing and direct on the ball, asking Cucurella to play on the front foot, drive forward at pace and deliver clear-cut chances from wide areas.
Getafe, meanwhile, are happy to surrender the bulk of possession, instead looking to be ruthless on the break and revel in their underdog status.
It is a football philosophy that clashes with his Barca upbringing, but the 21-year-old has nevertheless prospered.
What does he offer?
Cucurella may not directly solve Chelsea’s left back problems. He is adept there, but may fall into the same category as both Alonso and Emerson – very good going forward, but questionable defensively.
The majority of his senior experience has come as a left-sided midfielder or winger, spending his time camped in the opposition half.
