Fernando Torres explains what made Rafa Benitez particularly livid during Liverpool spell

Fernando Torres has revealed what would get Rafa Benitez’s back up during his time at Liverpool, and why he would need to take his manager aside if he needed to ask him a question.

The Spaniards were together at Anfield for three seasons between 2007 and 2010, a period in which Torres scored 72 goals in just 116 appearances.

Despite his prolific goal return and favour with supporters, Torres was not spared from the wrath of Benitez if he didn’t follow the rules.

Back in 2008, the former Atletico Madrid striker opened up on the rules behind speaking Spanish, and what his manager would do if he did so.

Torres, asked whether speaking English was compulsory during a 2008 interview with FourFourTwo, said: “Yes, it’s obligatory.

“If he catches us speaking Spanish, Rafa has a real go at us! The team talk is in English, always.

“If there is something specific the manager needs to say to me, he might take me aside and say so in Spanish or I will ask the other Spanish players.

“But the language is English in the dressing room, which is good: it helps me pick it up quickly.

“The first few days I spent hours doing classes, studying at home, practicing, especially football speak.

“I had to make sure I understood the team talks as soon as possible. If I needed something I would ask Rafa, but just me and him.”

The 36-year-old called time on a spectacular career back in 2019, having previously lavished praise on how his former boss influenced his performances.

He said: “They have been very important people for me in different times. With Benitez I reached a level I perhaps never dreamed of.”
