‘What a player’ – Former Chelsea man Joe Cole names the best player he ever played against

Former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole has revealed that former Blues teammate Ashley Cole is the best player he ever went up against during his career.

The duo spent four years together at Stamford Bridge, frequently linking up as a left-sided pair, before Joe Cole sealed a switch to Liverpool in 2010.

Despite having being teammates for four years, they often went up against each other in their careers, with Ashley Cole having spent seven years at Arsenal prior to his move to Stamford Bridge in 2006.

Though Joe Cole had the privilege of pitting himself up against some of the biggest names football has ever seen, the 38-year-old insists his former Blues teammate is the best player he ever had the challenge of facing.

“When I think about the best player that I played against, it’s actually a player that I played with and loved playing with, and it’s Ashley Cole,” the former Chelsea and England midfielder explained in a video on Chelsea’s official Twitter feed.

“Ashley was such a nightmare to play against, because defensively he had such great instincts.

“He would read your mind. If you were going to try and get in behind, he would get on your toes and take away that space. When you took a touch and think that you had got time to turn, he would be right on top of you.

“Also, he would constantly run forward. The timing of his runs were impeccable; he would always give the player on the ball an option.

“He was a remarkable player, had a great Chelsea career and we were proud to have him, but I hated playing against him.
