Liverpool’s ‘surprise’ stance as Chelsea close in on bargain £53m Timo Werner transfer

Sky Sports pundit Alan McInally says he is ‘surprised’ Liverpool haven’t attempted to sign RB Leipzig star Timo Werner.

Chelsea are believed to be edging closer to a deal that would see Werner arrive at Stamford Bridge for between £49m and £53m, with the Blues activating his release clause.

Liverpool were heavily linked with a move for the Germany international, but they did not make a move, and McInally can’t understand why.

“I’m still a little bit surprised that Jurgen Klopp hasn’t met the buyout clause, I think he would’ve fitted into Liverpool,” he said on Sky Sports’ Football Show.

“He can play up top, he was only really put up top when he was at Stuttgart before Leipzig even bought him, but he plays well from the left-hand side, he can also play just off the striker, which I think is probably his best position.

“Everytime he plays up top on his own or with somebody, he scores a goal. He should have scored at the weekend but didn’t, as they only drew 1-1, which was a bit disappointing.

“Chelsea are getting a fantastic player.

“He’s quick, he doesn’t give the ball away very often.
