There are still a number of season-defining matches remaining for Chelsea in the 2019/20 campaign, yet the upcoming transfer window is already the most productive for the club in many years. Having observed a FIFA-imposed transfer ban last summer and making no January additions, the squad at the Bridge needs to be freshened up.
The Blues have already secured two signings that have generated plenty of excitement among fans, landing Hakim Ziyech from Ajax alongside RB Leipzig striker and Germany international Timo Werner.
Yet there is still a great deal of hope that at least one more big-name signing will be made to further increase Frank Lampard’s attacking options.
After all, both Pedro Rodriguez and Willian are tipped to leave when their contracts expire at the end of the season, while the futures of several other Chelsea forward players remains uncertain. Michy Batshuayi may exit Stamford Bridge permanently, which would leave Lampard with even fewer attacking options for next season than this – when it was generally accepted that the squad was a little thin in this department.
Having already raided the Bundesliga for Werner this year, there are two other German-based stars who are now being strongly linked with a move to West London. England international Jadon Sancho, once of Manchester City and now a star for Borussia Dortmund, and Bayer Leverkusen ace Kai Havertz are both said to be on the radar.
Despite Chelsea receiving the transfer fee for Alvaro Morata – who originally joined Atletico Madrid on a loan deal in January 2019 – this summer, it is unlikely that there will be enough funds available to land both targets having already splashed out on Werner and Ziyech. The financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic this year also means that transfer fees are likely to be lower than in recent years.
Yet both Havertz and Sancho are rumoured to cost anywhere upwards of £80million – and even one player…
