Frank Lampard breaks silence on Chelsea’s rumoured chase of Man Utd’s Angel Gomes

Frank Lampard has moved to distance Chelsea from links to Manchester United youngster Angel Gomes, who is imminently set to become a free agent.

The highly-rated 19-year-old midfielder’s contract expires today after he rejected offers to agree a renewal with United, leaving Ole Gunnar Solskjaer frustrated.

Gomes, who has made just six appearances for Man Utd side this season, is understood to have concerns over the amount of playing time he will get should he sign a new deal at Old Trafford.

Reports recently claimed that Barcelona and Chelsea were keeping tabs on the situation and were preparing to make summer offers.

But when asked directly about Chelsea’s link with Gomes, Lampard replied: “Yeah, I can elaborate to the point where it’s never been mentioned my end, so that’s it.”

Solskjaer appeared to lay the blame for Gomes’ decision to quit United squarely at the feet of his representatives his father, Gil, and brother, Rico.

“You can ask Angel why he’s not signed,” the Norwegian said. “He’s not signed yet, I don’t know what the talks are behind the scenes.

“Angel’s a top kid. Of course there are people around him that advise him to do different things.

“If he doesn’t sign, all the best to Angel and I’m going to follow his career. If he signs for us, let’s kick on.”

Gomes became the fourth-youngest United player off all time at the age of 16 years and 263 days against Crystal Palace in May 2017.

But he has made one start in the last seven months and his representatives failed with a desperate attempt to secure a loan move to a Premier League club on deadline day in January.
