What Angel Gomes said about Jose Mourinho as Man United midfielder linked with Chelsea transfer

Angel Gomes is expected to leave Manchester United after failing to agree a contract extension, according to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The teenage midfielder’s deal at Old Trafford expires on Tuesday and Solskjaer has conceded that the 19-year-old is almost certain to leave.

Asked for an update on Gomes’ future, Solskjaer said: “To be honest, I have not heard from them last night or this morning.

“So it seems like they’ve not managed to agree, so the answer is probably short and ‘yes’ at the moment.

“I’ve got no news, so it doesn’t look like it [that he will sign a new deal].”

Gomes is rated as one of the most promising talents to have emerged from the United academy in recent years, and his availability on a free transfer has reportedly alerted Chelsea.

London rivals Tottenham are not thought to be in the running for Gomes’ signature, but the midfielder has previously hailed Spurs boss Jose Mourinho, who he worked under during the Portuguese’ time at United.

Gomes made his first team debut for United under Mourinho in the final game of the Portuguese’s first season at Old Trafford.

Saving players for the Europa League final, Mourinho used a largely rotated squad for a clash against Crystal Palace and Gomes, then only 16, was one of those involved as he replaced Wayne Rooney.

After Mourinho was sacked in December 2018, Gomes took to social media to pay tribute to his former manager.

He posted a tweet with the caption: ‘You allowed me to make my debut at 16 and play in front of the Stretford end something I will never forget ever. Thank you boss.’
