Chelsea’s busy transfer window continues but the arrival of Malang Sarr is perhaps one of the more surprising names to walk through the door at Stamford Bridge.
The 21-year-old has put pen-to-paper on a five-year contract in west London after his deal ran out with Nice at the end of the 2019/20 campaign.
The France U21 international will not join up with Frank Lampard’s squad straight away, with the centre-back expected to head out on loan for the upcoming season to get more playing time.
It is no secret that Chelsea had the worst goal record in the Premier League’s top ten last season, and they are hoping to put that right in the upcoming campaign.

However, the Blues are looking to a short-term fix in order to put it right, and Sarr is not seen as that option just yet.
Instead, the Blues are looking to bring in veteran Thiago Silva to help strengthen the defence, with a one-year deal, including an option for another season.
But on a free transfer, Sarr is a long-term option and give the Blues something they don’t have at the moment.
One of the things which is missing from a Chelsea centre-back are left-footers, which Sarr is.
At times, it means the Blues don’t have the right balance within the back line, and it could be key to open up the formation.
Lampard, like many teams in the Premier League, likes his side to play out from the back. Having a left-footed central defender would help his side move the ball quickly and smoothly from the backline to midfield.
The other benefit to Sarr is his ability to play in the left-back position, should the Blues need require it.
There has been a big debate for Chelsea fans around the future of the role, with question marks over both Marcos Alonso and Emerson Palmieri.
