Chelsea boss Frank Lampard makes Thiago Silva captaincy decision after free transfer

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard will NOT give Thiago Silva the captains armband when he joins the club.

Experienced centre-back Silva is expected to join the Blues shortly after leaving PSG, having run his contract down in the French capital.

The Brazil international brings a wealth of experience, having captained club and country for a number of years, and only narrowly missing out on winning the Champions League earlier this month.

It was speculated whether Silva would be given the armband at Stamford Bridge due to his reputation and Chelsea’s young side.

But The Telegraph report that there are no plans to strip skipper Cesar Azpilicueta of the role he has held since 2018.

Silva confirmed his departure from PSG this week, writing on Instagram: “Today a cycle ends, after eight years with the PSG team I would like to thank my team-mates, the whole technical team and management, the fans, my family, God and friends, for all these happy moments we experienced in the city of light.”

The 35-year-old has been backed to succeed at Chelsea by legendary fellow countryman Rivaldo.

The 2002 World Cup winner insists that Silva still has something to offer the Blues, and will provide a key presence in Lampard’s side.

Betfair Ambassador Rivaldo said: “I’m confident that he will do a great job there.

“He is a great centre back with excellent positioning and vast experience of world football.

“I think he still comes with plenty to offer. I’d back him to produce good football in the Premier League.
