The special quality that makes Kai Havertz stand out as Chelsea close in on £90m transfer

Kai Havertz’s former coach Tayfyn Korkut has named mental strength as his main attribute ahead of his expected move to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea have been working on a deal for a number of weeks and are closing in on a transfer after making a breakthrough in negotiations with Bayer Leverkusen.

Should he complete a move, Havertz will become the sixth new arrival at Stamford Bridge this summer, with Chelsea already having completed the transfers of Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell, Malang Sarr and Thiago Silva.

With the additions to the squad and the form that Havertz has shown in the Bundesliga, expectations will be high on both the team and individual.

However, the pressure is not something that will faze Havertz, according to former Leverkusen boss Korkut.

“This is possibly the most special thing about him, his mental power,” he told Sky Sports .

“You will not see the difference in him whether he is playing against Ingolstadt or Real Madrid, whether he is playing to avoid relegation or win a championship. He will always plays the same and at a high level.

“Even at 17, he did not have ups and downs. It was not about the coach being brave, it was about the player. He gave me that feeling that he could play those big games and he could. He has this unbelievable mental strength. I do not know if it translates into English but he is like an ice man.

“When you watch him now, you cannot tell if he is under pressure. I don’t know what he is feeling inside but he does not show it and that is an important quality if you want to be one of the best.
