Chelsea set to confirm transfer and Declan Rice is next on Frank Lampard’s spree

Chelsea are on the verge of confirming the arrival of Edouard Mendy from Rennes.

The goalkeeper will arrive after Frank Lampard made the position a priority following his lack of faith in Kepa Arrizabalaga.

The 28-year-old will join to compete with the Spaniard for the No. 1 jersey, though Kepa’s future is not immediately under threat.

Instead, the ex-Athletic Bilbao star looks set to stay this campaign and try prove Lampard wrong and fight for his position.

In the meantime, the Blues boss already has his next target in mind as he looks to make it eight transfers this summer.

According to Sky Sports, West Ham star Declan Rice is being eyed by Chelsea for their next swoop.

The England international has long been on Lampard’s radar as he looks to sign another centre-back.

Despite Rice being played in midfield for club and country, the Blues believe he would do a job in defence.

Indeed, centre-back is the 21-year-old’s natural position and was only moved to midfield because of an injury crisis at West Ham.

He performed well there and has since solidified himself as a key player at the London Stadium.

The Hammers are extremely reluctant to sell Rice and have priced him at £80m in a bid to ward off interest.

But as the window stretches on, their stance will become softer if they do not manage to sell off their fringe players.

Chelsea also benefit from the efforts of Marina Granovskaia, who has done tremendous work whittling down prices this summer.

Ben Chilwell was quoted at £80m only for him to arrive at Stamford Bridge for an initial £50m, rising to £65m after certain add-ons.
