Kai Havertz ‘gave up massive bonus’ to see Chelsea transfer go through

New Chelsea signing Kai Havertz reportedly forfeited a major bonus to leave Bayer Leverkusen this summer.

Havertz completed a £72.7m switch to Stamford Bridge earlier this month, which could rise to more than £90m with add-on clauses.

The move was heavily rumoured for weeks before it was finalised and, according to German publication Sport Bild, a major breakthrough in the protracted negotiations came when the player himself agreed to forfeit a clause in his existing Leverkusen contract.

Havertz was entitled to 10 per cent of his transfer fee when he left Leverkusen but he decided to waive that, meaning Leverkusen lowered their asking price.
