Chelsea’s bumper summer transfer window might not end with Edouard Mendy.
The Rennes goalkeeper is set to challenge Kepa Arrizabalaga for his spot in the starting XI last season after a string of disappointing performances from the Spaniard last time out.
The Blues have already brought in Hakim Ziyech, Malang Sarr, Ben Chilwell, Thiago Silva and Kai Havertz for a combined fee of over £200m, and they could bring in two more.
Mendy is now set to join that list for around £20m, but it might not the final incoming deal at Stamford Bridge before the October 5 transfer deadline.
Rennes goalkeeper Edouard Mendy is wanted by Chelsea
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano wrote on Twitter on Friday: “Edouard Mendy will be in London in next few hours – the deal is 100 per cent done.”
Romano then added that Chelsea will then turn their attention to Declan Rice of West Ham, but they won’t be matching their valuation of around £75m.
Frank Lampard said of their summer spending earlier this week: “It changes the landscape, yes, but I am excited by that as much as feeling the pressure. I understand the different nature of the pressure coming this year.
“It is why I love doing it. I didn’t come into this job to fight for fourth place, although I know last year that it was an achievement.
Frank Lampard has admitted that the pressure has changed at Chelsea
“I didn’t come in to just bring Academy players into the first-team and say I gave debuts to this many players, I came here to win.
“I know expectations will be there. I won’t hide away from that. My expectations are on a different level from last year.
“Other people can talk about whether we challenge or not. We finished a lot of points behind Liverpool.
