Every word Frank Lampard said on Chelsea’s win at Brighton, Kepa, Timo Werner and injuries

How much better will you need to be against Liverpool?

Well, we will be better. This is our first game and we’ve only been together as a group for four days, we’ve had all the players together and we’ve had two debuts tonight.

We showed a lot of good stuff. It wasn’t where we want to be in the end – that will take a bit of time and we will improve for Liverpool as well. But first game of the season it’s all about getting a win, certainly when you come to a place like Brighton. And I think we did a lot of things to get that.

Was Jorginho ok?

Yeah Jorginho was just tired. We’ve had a lot of quarantines at the club, players going away with internationals and we’re not fully fit at the moment. And that’s just the way it is.

I thought they dealt with the rigours of the game very well today, in terms of how tough it is to come back when you’re not quite there. It was very pleasing to get the result we did.

Kepa concern and has Mendy had a medical?

I can’t confirm that. That’s news to me as I’ve been preparing for the game. but I won’t talk about players from other clubs. In terms of Kepa I’ll need to see the goal back later.

RLC in a more advanced role. Will you use that in the future and is he a bit rusty?

Ruben obviously has been out for a long time and even his return to play was pretty broken by the lockdown and the restart when he was just available to play a few games. So we certainly have to give him a bit of time on those fronts.

But no it’s a position that Ruben can play for us, we’ve got injuries with Ziyech out and Pulisic out as well.

So they are players that will come back and give me lots of options, so it was interesting for me to see Ruben in that number 10 position today, he can certainly give us lots in those areas.

Impressed by Timo’s performance?

I was really pleased with Timo, with Timo I know the qualities he’s going…
