Timo Werner has revealed Frank Lampard convinced him to join Chelsea by explaining how he would fit perfectly into his system at Stamford Bridge.
The Germany striker joined Chelsea in a £54million switch from RB Leipzig this summer, despite reports previously indicating he was set to join Premier League champions Liverpool.
He made his long-awaited debut for the club on Monday night, winning an early penalty for Jorginho to convert in their opening 3-1 win away at Brighton.
Lampard was delighted with his performance at the Amex, and Werner insists the Blues manager’s style of play and vision for him in west London was a crucial factor in him joining.

“It was a strange time when we didn’t meet each other,” the 24-year-old said.
“We met each other here for the first time because of the virus. But he called me a lot, we had a lot of conversations. He text me a lot, he sent me a lot of videos where he can show me where he wants me to play and what style of football he wants to play.

“I loved playing at Leipzig and everything was well for me there, so it was really important for me to come to a team with a vision that fits my style of football. The whole Premier League fits very well to my style because it’s so fast and it has really good spaces to play well.
“It was really important that he gave me a feeling that the system he wants to play fits to me very well.”
