Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has admitted that new signing Thiago Silva will need to overcome the language barrier after joining from Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer.
The experienced defender made an error on his debut against West Bromwich Albion last weekend, losing his footing for the Baggies in a game which ended 3-3.
Speaking after the game, Lampard highlighted the language barrier as something Silva needs to overcome but backed the Brazilian to be a success.
“Thiago will be a very, very good player for us,” he said. “He doesn’t speak the language very well but that’s just something we will have to work through.
Chelsea defender Thiago Silva is struggling with the language barrier, Blues manager Frank Lampard has admitted
“It is what it is but I’m not sure how relevant that is to the game. There are players here that can speak the languages that he can, with French being the main one.
“But we also have lads here that can speak Portuguese and Italian, which Thiago can, and they can interact with him. If the language is a slight barrier then we will need time to work on that, and that is what we have in front of us.
The Brazilian was at fault for West Brom’s second goal on his debut but Lampard has backed him to be a success
“Despite the language issues though, he still shows the leadership skills that he has. People will want to talk about his mistake and that’s fair, it comes with the nature of being the top footballer that he has throughout his career.
“But at the same time, other than that one moment, we saw just how good he is. We saw his leadership skills, his quality and I think we are going to see more of that as the season progresses.”
