Former Premier League midfielder Joe Cole believes that Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti shares the same winning mentality as his former boss Jose Mourinho.
Cole won two league titles under the enigmatic Portuguese coach in 2005 and 2006, and told BT Sport before Saturday’s Merseyside derby that Ancelotti, much like Mourinho, is a ‘winner’ and has his own ‘personal way’ of instilling success into his squads.
The former Chelsea, Liverpool and West Ham playmaker recalled a team talk from when Mourinho had just joined the Blues which made a big impression on him and his teammates.
“He looked at us, listed all the trophies we’d won, and said to us: ‘None of you guys are winners’.
“He said: ‘If you come with me we are going to win the league’ and he actually said the date, when we were going to win it, and it makes you stand up and think, ‘right, we can get behind this guy’.

“That’s empty words but then it was every day, intensity on the training ground, putting the principles in play.
“If a team lost massively in five-a-side he used to go crazy, because he used to say that you cannot have that big a deficit between two quality teams, so it comes from the manager.”
Cole likened Mourinho’s obsession with chasing titles to Ancelotti’s knack for effective man-management, which has helped produce plenty of trophies during the Italian’s managerial career.

“I know from Carlo, when he walked into it, he had it but in a very different way, his very personal way, he put his arm round the players.
“The brilliant thing about Carlo and his management is he knows which players need an arm…
