Alan Shearer believes Chelsea’s bungling defence has the potential to leave Blues boss Frank Lampard a “nervous wreck” after his side threw away two points on Saturday.
The Blues were on course for victory against Southampton after a brace from Timo Werner put Lampard’s side two goals to the good at Stamford Bridge.
But familiar flaws crept in and Kurt Zouma and Kepa Arrizabalaga were guilty of errors to allow Saints back into the game.
Then, deep into added time, Hakim Ziyech lost possession in a dangerous area and Jannik Vestergaard’s opportunistic header from a subsequent free kick made it 3-3 as Ralph Hasenhüttl’s men stole a point.
Recognition of Chelsea’s potential is universal, and Werner, Kai Havertz – who scored his first Premier League goal on Saturday – and co. have showed signs of flourishing into a menacing attacking force.
But Shearer, speaking on Match Of The Day, believes Chelsea will struggle to achieve success if Lampard does not sort his defence out.
“Too many individual errors, once Southampton got the belief and started to press them a little bit higher.
“In the second half they (Southampton) get 10 yards further up the pitch, there’s another error from Zouma, another one from the goalkeeper.
“Frank must have been a nervous wreck anytime the ball went anywhere near their defence because Southampton caused them all sorts of problems.
