Frank Lampard confirmed the Chelsea No 1 shirt is now comeback kid Edouard Mendy’s to lose.
Mendy returned from a thigh injury to make a big save against Sevilla in his side’s Champions League opener – and keep his second clean sheet in three games.
And Lampard insisted the £22m signing from Rennes is now his undisputed No 1 ahead of Kepa Arriabalaga.
He said: “The way he’s played in the three games he’s been here, at the minute yes he is. We knew his qualities coming in.
“He had one save to make and he made a good save, he was good with his feet. Against a good team, it was a very organised performance from us.
Frank Lampard saw his Chelsea held by Sevilla
“I spoke to the players about game management. I was pleased with that side of it. Sevilla are a top team. To get the clean sheet was important.
“It’s a positive result. Losing the first game last season affected us as a group. The clean sheet was a big deal for us.”
Defender Ben Chilwell claims Chelsea answered their critics with a gritty display after they threw away a lead to draw 3-3 with Southampton.
Edouard Mendy returned for Chelsea having been out injured recently
He said: “We are a top team and when you’re playing for Chelsea you expect clean sheets and if you concede goals you will get criticism.
“We’ve been working hard on the training pitch and we’ve showed that we’re a strong outfit defensively.
“The important thing is the clean sheet.
