Timo Werner now an exciting Golden Boot bet after slow start » Chelsea News

The signing of Timo Werner was perfectly placed to generate hype.

The striker signed for Chelsea in the middle of a summer when no football was actually being played for 6 months, meaning that everyone – Chelsea fans and non-Chelsea fans alike – were able to consider his prospects in the Premier League for a long time.

There will have been plenty, especially Blues fans, who spent that time watching Youtube compilations of his goals at RB Leipzig over the last few years.

No wonder so much hype was being generated, and no wonder he was such a popular fantasy football pick going into this season.

For those who did end up selecting the Germany striker however, it’s hasn’t gone too well. He drew 4 blanks in a row before rattling in two against Southampton, and then looked quiet again against Manchester United this weekend just gone.

That puts him a gaping 5 goals behind Son Heung-Min, who leads the top scorers table with 7, and a game in hand to play tonight. If fancy a wager on Werner to end the season as top scorer, this is the time to cash in on some very long odds. OLBG’s list of free bets show that the former Red Bull man is now a very serious outsider for the league’s golden boot award (as he should be), but that just makes it a more thrilling bet.

Yes he’s off to a relatively slow start, but it’s early days yet. 5 goals is a big gap to overhaul, but it should be remembered that Son isn’t on penalties for Tottenham, and he has Harry Kane on his team too, so he doesn’t get quite the same chances to pull away as the team’s dominant goal-scorer as he might otherwise.

He’s in brilliant form, and he’s a brilliant player, but it only takes a little slowdown to allow Werner back into the picture over the long stretch of the season still to come. Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Patrick Bamford have had superb starts to the season, but look certain to drop off the pace at some point too.
