Christian Pulisic handed Chelsea an untimely injury blow after pulling out of the game against Burnley in the warm-up.
The American was due to start the game at Turf Moor on Saturday but pulled up before the game got underway.
Timo Werner, who was initially supposed to be a substitute, instead started for Frank Lampard’s side.
Werner was benched because of his need for a rest, having played a large role in Chelsea’s league and cup campaigns so far this season.
But Lampard’s plans were thrown into disarray with the last-minute injury problem.

Pulisic’s problem is unclear, though he was able to return to the side of the pitch and watch the action.
It would suggest that his problem is a minor niggle, and Chelsea have instead decided not to take any risks.
It also means that Pulisic has missed 10 games this season through injury problems.
